Clinical Social Workers are distinguished within social work practice as they hold advanced clinical certifications that allow them to independently diagnose mental health disorders using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). They are required to complete a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in social work before making application to obtain clinical status. They must demonstrate extensive experience, undergo a minimum of two years of supervision, and complete a licensing exam prior to being granted clinical status. As such, clinical social workers are recognized by most insurance companies along with the Canadian Armed Forces, Veteran’s Affairs, Worker’s Compensation Board, and Non-insured Health Benefits to provide services considered equitable to that of registered psychologists.
